[Softball] Thunderbirds Oust Saints from A.I.I. Tournament

VICTORIA, Texas – With their season on the line, the Ashford University softball team took to the diamond on day two of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Tournament on Thursday morning. Standing in the Saints' way was the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, who were also looking to keep their season alive.

On a wet and windy day, the Saints saw their 2013 season come to an end, falling to the Thunderbirds, 11-0.

VICTORIA, Texas – On the eve of the 2013 Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Tournament, the Ashford softball team learned that six members had earned spots on the all-conference squads.

Catcher Shelby Hobelman, outfielder Alex Bitto and pitcher Nicole Schmidt were all named First Team All-A.I.I. squad at the A.I.I. Spring Championships banquet.

VICTORIA, Texas – Wednesday morning brought day one of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Tournament, where the #4-seeded Ashford University softball team opened play against the #5-seeded Lady Generals of Louisiana State University-Alexandria.

Despite pounding out 12 hits, the Saints find themselves in an elimination scenario after day one, falling to the Lady Generals, 4-2.

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – One final road trip was all that stood between the Ashford University softball team and post-season play. On Saturday, the Saints completed their regular season schedule with a pair of games against the Lady Statesmen of William Penn University.

On a day in which offense was at a premium, the Saints dropped game one by a score of 3-1, but came away with a split with 3-2 triumph in game two.

MORRISON, Ill. – Saturday marked the conclusion of the inaugural Ashford University Spring Jamboree, a day in which the Ashford softball team walked away with a split to finish 3-1 for the tournament.

In the day's opening game, the Saints downed Judson University (Ill.), 6-4. Game two was a different story as the Saints dropped a five-inning contest to #17-ranked Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), 11-2.

MORRISON, Ill. – While conditions for softball weren't ideal for softball on Friday, the Ashford softball team battled through strong winds and chilly temperatures on the first day of the Ashford Spring Jamboree.

After the Saints' bats started off as cold as the temperature outside, AU's offense would heat up late to down Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in game one, 10-5. That offensive momentum carried over to game two, where the Saints thumped Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.), 14-6, in six innings.

CLINTON – After playing the season's first 30 games away from River Queen Field, the Ashford University softball team hosted its 2013 home opener on Sunday afternoon, welcoming the Lynx of Lindenwood University-Belleville for a pair of games.

Although rain was in the forecast, Mother Nature held off long enough for the Saints to come away with a sweep of the Lynx, taking game one, 4-2, before closing the day with a 10-2 (5 inn.) rout in game two.

CLINTON – The Ashford University softball team updated its weekend schedule Friday afternoon.

Head Coach Kevin Jannusch and the Saints announced that Saturday's (Apr. 13) doubleheader against Clarke University has been postponed. The Saints and Crusaders have not scheduled a makeup date for the doubleheader.

CHICAGO – The Ashford softball team concluded a six-game weekend road trip in the Windy City on Sunday, Apr. 7, tangling with the #15-ranked Cougars of St. Xavier University.

The Saints pushed the home town Cougars to the limit in game one, falling in nine innings, 6-5. That momentum would carry over to game two for SXU, as they completed the sweep with a 5-0 win.
