Sophomore Adam Wojciechowski belted a pair of home runs in a split with Waldorf College

FOREST CITY, Iowa - Ashford University's baseball team split a pair of high-scoring affairs in an afternoon doubleheader against Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, on Wednesday, winning 20-8 and falling 12-5.

AU collected its third win in Midwest Collegiate Conference play while moving its overall record to 8-18 on the season.

The Saints were dealt a severe blow early on as senior third baseman and Clinton native Brian Cummings left the game in the top off the second inning.

Cummings was struck in the face by a pitch from Waldorf starter Tyson Nesbitt with the bases loaded. After being evaluated by a Waldorf trainer, he was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured cheekbone. His status is unknown for the rest of the season.

Already without regulars in outfielder Jordan Wakeley and shortstop Brandon Van Blaricome, Ashford loses Cummings in the middle of a 13-game hitting streak that was extended with a single in his first at-bat.

Sophomore first baseman Adam Wojciehowski helped carry the Saints' offense, homering in both games and driving in a combined nine runs.

The Saints routed the Warriors in game one, scoring in every frame before the 10-run rule applied in the fifth inning.

Senior outfielder Jake Steve and Wojciechowski each drove in five runs from the middle of the lineup while Anthony Misitano scored five times in four official at-bats.

Wojciechowski and Misitano each homered as Ashford produced 16 hits off of five Warriors' pitchers.

Senior Tyler Sukut added three RBI while freshman, Tim Elias, who pinch-ran for Cummings in the second innings, recorded two hits in three trips to the plate.

Freshman catcher Cameron Puetz helped fuel a seven-run second inning with a two-run double and sophomore leadoff hitter Austin Poindexter had his fourth consecutive multi-hit game.

Freshman southpaw Mitch Jankowski went the distance to earn his second win of the year, striking out six through five innings.

Ashford jumped out to a three-run lead in game two but couldn't hold on as Waldorf went on to score four runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Poindexter recorded two hits for the sixth straight game dating back to last weekend's doubleheader against Grand View University. He had two doubles in game two, numbers nine and 10 on the season for the Bettendorf, Iowa, native.

Wojciehowski hit a two-run shot in the first inning and later added a two-run double after Poindexter led off the fifth inning with a double and Brandon Meyer walked.

Ashford's pitching staff struggled to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard as three Saints' hurlers were roughed up for 12 runs on 13 hits.

The Saints return home tomorrow at Alliant Energy Field for a shot at William Penn University (22-11, 7-4 MCC) at 3 p.m. It will be the teams' first meeting of the season.
