CLINTON, Iowa - Adding another piece to the rebuilding process, the Ashford University men's golf program added another key component earlier this month, gaining the commitment of Grandville High School standout Jonathan LaRue of Grand Rapids, Mich.
LaRue is the third recruit to commit to the Saints, joining Ryan Hilton of Waterford, Wis., and Brendan Cornies of Leamington, Ontario.
"In trying to build a winning program, you need to recruit players who know how to win," said AU Head Coach Josh Heiple. "Jonathan has 18 career victories and that says a lot about what kind of player he is. It is one thing to play into contention, but it's another to seal the deal. Jonathan could have played at any level of college golf and we are ecstatic that he chose Ashford."
A two-time co-MVP of the Grandville High School varsity golf squad, LaRue earned Michigan Div. I All-State Honorable Mention honors during his junior season after leading the Ok-Red Conference in scoring average for 18-hole tournaments as well as nine-hole matches.
It was also during his junior campaign that LaRue earned First Team Ok-Red First Team All-Conference selection for the second consecutive year after earning Honorable Mention honors as a freshman.
With all of those accomplishments already under his belt just three years into his prep career, the best might just be yet to come for him this spring as a senior.
After finishing second at the 2010 Adams Tour Championship, LaRue took seventh-place honors in the player of the year standing on Michigan's top Junior Tour this past season. In 2009, LaRue won a Michigan Junior Amateur Qualifier as well.
A prospective Sport and Recreation Management major, LaRue is a standout in the classroom as well, garnering high academic honors throughout his prep career at Grandville. He is the son of Stephen and Michelle LaRue.
