CLINTON, Iowa - Behind the combination of two starting left-handed pitchers, William Penn University cooled down the Ashford University baseball team's hot offense, downing the Saints in a pair of conference games, 10-5 and 10-0, on Thursday at Alliant Energy Field.

The Saints dropped to 8-20 on the season and 3-11 in Midwest Collegiate Conference action. The Statesmen moved back into a first-place tie with Mount Mercy College, sitting at 9-4 in league play.

William Penn threw two starting southpaws at the Saints as Joey Grant worked six effective innings to earn the win in game one and Chris Wedel carried a no-hit bid through 4 1/3 innings in game two.

After homering twice and driving home nine RBI in Wednesday's doubleheader at Waldorf College, AU first baseman Adam Wojciechowski continued his hot streak with three hits in game one.

Wojciechowski has continued to emerge from an early-season slump, hitting at a .128 clip through the Saints' doubleheader with Clarke College (March 26). Ashford Head Coach John Govek inserted the sophomore in the clean-up spot for today's games and has hit safely in seven of his past 10 games.

Despite outhitting William Penn 13-11, Ashford loaded the bases in the first and third innings, but was able to cash in just one run on an RBI groundout by freshman catcher Cameron Puetz in the third frame.

Additional RBI's came off the bats of leadoff hitter Austin Poindexter, senior Tyler Sukut, sophomore Jake Peters and freshman Elliot Swiatly.

Statesmen Garrett Jenner and clean-up hitter Ramon Cabral each homered.

Senior catcher Scott Schmitt broke up the perfect game and no-hit bid for Wedel in game two, getting plunked in the second inning and singling in the fifth.

AU starter J.D. Fabian was roughed up after a complete-game shutout in his last start at Grand View University. Fabian was charged with seven runs -- five earned -- through 2 1/3 innings as William Penn sprayed nine hits off the junior.

Freshman Tim Elias recorded a pinch-hit single in the fifth off Wedel, but Ashford couldn't bring home a run to extend the game as the 10-run rule came into effect.

Jenner and second baseman Jaime Ayala recorded three hits apiece as five different William Penn hitters doubled.

Ashford continues conference play next week at Viterbo University, heading to La Crosse, Wisc., for a two-day trip against the Hawks. The start time for the games on Monday, April 13, are set at 1 p.m. while Tuesday's matchup will begin at 3 p.m.
