BENSENVILLE, Ill. - Sophomore midfielder Chelsea Fisher of Calgary, Alberta, scored with less than four minutes left in regulation off a corner kick and the Ashford University women's soccer team prevailed over Siena Heights University (Mich.), 1-0, on Sunday.
The Saints (2-3 overall) snapped a two-game slide that included matches against teams garnering national recognition in No. 20 Trinity Christian University and Robert Morris University, which received votes in the NAIA Preseason Top-25 Coaches Poll.
The Saints of Siena Heights fell to 1-2 overall on the season. SHU also lost to Midwest Collegiate Conference counterpart St. Ambrose University on Saturday with less than two minutes remaining in the match.
"It's always good to get back on the winning track," AU Head Coach Mick Regan said. "Our players have gone up against high-quality competition in every game this season and it's really building up more resiliency once we head into conference play."
Fisher booted in the winning shot after a corner kick by Amanda Campos of Sao Paulo, Brazil, at the 86:59 mark. It marked the Canadian's second game in a row with a goal after she capitalized on a penalty kick against Robert Morris yesterday.
Fisher also got a shot on goal that was saved by SHU goalkeeper Haley Mancini less than a minute before Campos' corner attempt.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jerika Castillo of Iowa City made three saves en route to the shutout victory in net. She lowered her goals against average to a 1.43 clip in over 315 minutes played while appearing in every game to date this season.
Ashford outshot Siena Heights by an 11-10 count.
The Saints welcome Coe College on Wednesday at the new artificial turf complex at the AU South Campus on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. match with the men's game following after.
