SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - A record-setting day helped the Ashford University men's cross country team place third at the Waubonsee Chiefs Invitational on Saturday, as sophomore Mizael Carerra of Northlake, Ill., and freshman Brian Meyer of Bloomington, Ill., earned their spot in the record books.

Carerra and Meyer's times of 27:47 and 27:49, respectively, are now the sixth and seventh fastest times ever ran in Ashford men's cross country history.

"Overall I thought we paced ourselves very well today and I am satisfied with the results," said AU Head Coach Tyson Graham. "With the men running even more mileage than the women this week our legs were sore, heavy, and tired. The men still rose to the occasion and earned a trophy for the first time this season."

Following the finishes of Carerra (seventh) and Meyer (ninth), junior Doug Powers of Greenup, Ill., also earned individual honors as he placed 12th overall with a time of 28:25.

With a time of 29:33, freshman Thomas Hansen of Hometown, Ill., earned a 20th-place finish while sophomore teammate Rafael Crisosto of Franklin Park, Ill., finished closely behind with a time of 30:19, good for 25th place overall.

Running for the first time this season was 2009 All-MCC selection and NAIA qualifier Andrew Drinkall. The senior from Hooppole, Ill., had an impressive showing his first meet of the season, claiming 28th place honors with a time of 30:37.

Freshman Matt McCune of Davenport was the seventh and final member of the Saints roster to finish in the top 30 runners, finishing 29th overall with a time of 30:38.

Sophomore Patrick McClain of Gary, Ind., finished in 50th place following his run of 32:22 while freshman Carl Woodard of Silvis, Ill., crossed the finish line nearly a minute after him (33:21) in 56th place.

Finishing with a time of 34:26 was sophomore Aleksander Jakobsen of Rock Island, Ill., which was the 62nd-fastest time of the meet. Freshman David Trotter of Indianapolis, Ind., was the final Ashford runner to come across the line, earning 68th with a time of 39:23.

The Saints will take their talents to the biggest meet of the season thus far next week, traveling to Iowa State University in Ames for the Iowa Intercollegiate Championships.
