CLINTON, Iowa - The Ashford University baseball program continued a recent flurry of activity on the recruiting front by announcing another pair of key signings as outfielder Michael Johnson of Windsor, Wis., and pitcher Dylan Waugh of Peoria, Ariz., pledged.
"Michael is a tremendous athlete and goes about his business quietly," AU Head Coach John Govek said. "He has an amazing arm in the infield, but it's strong enough to play the outfield for us. He puts in countless hours working on his swing to get better. His work ethic is tireless with the potential to become a dominant player."
Johnson officially signed during Ashford's new student orientation weekend. The standout from DeForest Area High School joins a number of Saints' student-athletes from the Badger State, including newcomer infielder Matt Follen of Waunakee, Wis.
Johnson was a four-year starter for the Norskies in a career that included a considerable number of accolades on the diamond and on the gridiron as a member of the football squad. He closed out his career by competing in the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Star weekend late-June in Oshkosh.
Johnson was a First-Team All-Northern Badger Conference pick before matching that recognition as a senior and receiving first-team all-district and honorable mention all-state honors in his final season. He shattered the school record of hits in a single season as a senior, finishing with 39, eclipsing the previous 15-year mark of 31.
Johnson is currently playing in a semi-pro wood-bat league in Wisconsin for the Racine Kiwanis.
The son of Rich and Renea Johnson, Michael plans on majoring in Education while at Ashford. He picked Ashford over heavy interest from Western Illinois University.
Waugh is a left-handed pitching talent coming to Iowa from Liberty High School in Arizona. As a senior, he was racked up first-team all-region status, advanced to the Arizona state All-Star Game and helped Liberty to its first ever Class 4A State Championship.
Waugh is the son of Scot and Lori Waugh. He chose Ashford over Briar Cliff University and will start his studies with the intent of a degree in Business and Marketing while at Ashford.
"Dylan really helped his team win state and brings experience throwing in pressure situations," Govek said. "He has shown great command down in the strike zone and great command of his off-speed pitches."
