CLINTON, Iowa - A busy recruiting week for the Ashford University men's basketball program concluded with the signing of Wabash Valley Community College guard Jason Landry of Milwaukee, Wis.
Landry becomes the seventh commitment for the men's program this offseason and was the second junior college transfer to commit to the Saints last week, joining former Kirkwood Community College standout Lamar Wall of Milwaukee, Wis.
"Our program is very excited to have Jason's commitment because he will be a great fit in the way we want to play here at Ashford University with great athleticism, versatility and work ethic," said AU Head Coach Oliver Drake. "Jason plays above the rim and we see him as a guy that should be able to slash, rebound and defend at a very high level. We expect Jason to have an immediate impact on our program and we really look forward to working with him this season."
A key contributor at Wabash Community College in Mt. Carmel, Ill., Landry scored 79 points and recorded 49 rebounds this past season to help the Warriors compile a 28-5 record and finish sixth place nationally in the National Junior College Athletic Association Div. I tournament.
During his tenure at Wabash, Landry was coached by Dan Sparks and was named the team's Most Improved and Most Inspirational Player for his role on the court.
Prior to attending Wabash, Landry was a standout student-athlete at Milwaukee-St. Vincent High School, where he was named the Most Improved Player during his senior season.
The son of Anita and Mark Landry, Landry comes from a basketball family as his brother, Carl, currently plays in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Sacramento Kings. His other brother, Marcus, played with the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics during this past season as well. In addition to that, Landry's sister, Shenita, played collegiately at Temple University and currently plays basketball overseas.
Landry is the second player at Ashford within recent memory to have a student-athlete with ties to the NBA. Graduated senior women's basketball forward Shel'si Weaver's brother, Kyle, is currently with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
A prospective Business major when he arrives to campus, Landry enjoys fishing when he isn't on the court, and ultimately chose Ashford over Cincinnati Christian University and Oakland City University.
