CLINTON, Iowa - The Ashford University men's basketball program dove into the junior college recruiting pool for its latest signing, gaining the commitment of Kirkwood Community College guard Lamar Wall of Milwaukee, Wis.
Wall becomes the sixth commitment for Saints first-year Head Coach Oliver Drake and assistant coach Justin Jackson.
"Our program is very excited to have Lamar's commitment," said Drake. "Lamar has spent the last two years in one of the best junior college programs in the country and he's been a part of a championship program at Kirkwood. He will bring instant athleticism, versatility and toughness to our program."
A standout prep athlete at Milwaukee Northwest High School, Wall led the state of Wisconsin with a scoring average of 26.7 points per contest during his senior year for the Chargers.
After choosing to attend Kirkwood, Wall was coached by the heralded Doug Wagamester and played for an Eagles program that has been to the NJCAA national tournament on seven occasions in the past 10 years. Two of those appearances involved Wall, who averaged three points per game and helped the Eagles to a 27-6 record and national runner-up finish during his freshman year.
The Eagles won the regular season Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Championship and advanced to the Region IX Tournament where they defeated Ellsworth Community College in the title game, securing a birth in the national tournament.
This past season, Wall returned to the court to lead the Eagles to a second place regular season finish in the ICCAC before triumphing over Ellsworth once more for the Region IX crown and berth in the national tournament.
In opening round game against Waubonsee Community College, Wall notched 12 points to lead the Eagles to victory and followed that performance in the second round with season-high 17 points in a win over Louisburg Community College. After losing the next game to Lincoln College, the Eagles posted a victory over Lewis & Clark College to claim third place nationally.
During his sophomore season, Wall averaged 7.7 points and 2.4 assists per game to help the Eagles record a 28-8 season.
"We expect Lamar to have an immediate impact and we're
grateful that he's chosen Ashford to continue his basketball career," added
Drake.
