MT. PLEASANT, Iowa - The hard work and success by the Ashford University women's golf team didn't go unnoticed by the Midwest Collegiate Conference and its peers as league postseason awards were announced this afternoon.
AU Head Coach Josh Davis was named the MCC Coach of the Year, while junior standout Jordan Davis of Delmar was bestowed with MCC Player of the Year honors. Sophomore Brittany Boon of Bloomington, Ill., joined Davis as one of five on the MCC All-Conference Team.
A total of 11 student-athletes were named to the MCC All-Conference Team, including five to the honorable mention squad.
"It's a humbling honor to be recognized by the conference and I'm very excited for Jordan and Brittany after terrific seasons the course," Josh Davis said. "We are excited about next year already and building off of strong team momentum that we put together in the spring and fall."
Jordan Davis, an NAIA National Championships qualifier and reigning MCC individual champion a year ago, was named the conference player of the week for a record four times. She was blistering in the fall, winning medalist honors in three events (Iowa Wesleyan, St. Ambrose, Augustana) while teaming up with Boon to win the Mt. Mercy Best Ball scramble.
Davis carried that momentum over to the spring where she claimed top position in the 2010-opening Mt. Mercy Invitational. She went on to help the Saints reel off a convincing win at the Augustana Invitational and finished third in the MCC Championship.
Even though Davis won the MCC Championship in the fall and spring of her sophomore season of 2008-09, she was edged out for MCC Player of the Year honors by Kelly Jansen of St. Ambrose University.
Boon was consistently in the top 10 all year, closing her sophomore campaign with a fourth-place effort at the Clarke Spring Invitational. She was an All-MCC Honorable Mention selection following her freshman season.
Josh Davis guided a young Ashford squad to a third-place showing at the MCC Championship in Ankeny in his second season at the helm of the Saints program. Davis will have the entire team returning for next season, including three heralded newcomers, criteria that will make the Saints early favorites in the MCC.
