MT. PLEASANT, Iowa - A pair of Ashford University baseball juniors, Austin Poindexter of Bettendorf, and Mike Ray of Sycamore, Ill., were both selected to the Honorable Mention All-Midwest Collegiate Conference Team the league announced earlier today.
Ray and Poindexter enjoyed breakout years at the plate for
the Saints and defensively at the shortstop and left field positions,
respectively.
All told, 35 student-athletes were recognized as part of the all-conference teams as voted by the coaches and 10 were chosen to the Gold Glove Team.
"We are proud to have Austin and Mike recognized by the conference coaches for their impressive seasons," AU Head Coach John Govek said. "Both have contributed immensely to the offensive success we achieved and defensive stability that we were able to show on the field. We look forward to having them for one more year and seeing what they can do as seniors."
Ray led the conference in stolen bases, swiping 20 in 22 attempts. He also paced the Saints in runs, crossing the plate 31 times, and ranked second on the team in batting average just behind Poindexter, raking at a .355 clip in his first season after transferring from Waubonsee Community College.
Ray was also second on the team in hits (49), doubles (eight) and RBI (26). He drew 24 walks, tying for the team-high total while batting primarily at the leadoff position and started all 41 games he appeared in during the season.
Ray compiled 17 multi-hit games, including a four-game streak to end the year. He enjoyed a career day at the plate in a series sweep against Indiana University-Northwest in early April, driving in three runs, scoring three times, swiping three bases and ending the game prematurely with a three-run homer.
The sweet-swinging Poindexter broke through with a team-leading .372 average and 10 doubles. He was just a triple shy of the cycle at Mt. Mercy College, ripping his first home run of the season and going 5-for-5 at the plate to spoil the Mustangs' Senior Day.
Poindexter also led the squad with 54 hits batting from the left side of the plate and appeared in a team-high 47 games with 46 starts. He was 11-for-17 in a torrid four-game stretch towards the end of the year, terrorizing Iowa Wesleyan College in a tripleheader for six hits, followed by his effort against Mt. Mercy.
Poindexter started the year recording a hit in six of the team's first seven games. He ripped six of his 10 doubles in the Saints' final dozen games.
Iowa Wesleyan's Edder Morales clubbed 18 home runs en route to MCC Player of the Year honors. William Penn University's Eric Krause was tabbed as the MCC Pitcher of the Year while a pair of skippers shared co-Coach of the Year accolades in IWC's Brett Monaghan and Grand View University's Lou Yacinich.
