DUBUQUE, Iowa - After freshman Spencer Touchie of Hometown, Ill., set the Ashford University men's track and field school record in the hammer throw last season, it is safe to assume that he wanted to hold onto the record for longer than one year.
Senior Brian Cummings of Clinton, however, had a different idea as he broke Touchie's record this past weekend at the University of Dubuque Spartan Open, earning a third-place finish and new school record with a throw of 38.51 meters (126'4").
Cummings edged out freshman teammate Joe Snyder of Winnebago, Ill., in the event, even after Snyder's best throw of 38.07 also broke Touchie's previous record.
Prior to holding the second longest hammer throw in school history, Snyder went to the track for the first time this season to compete in the 100-meter dash. With a time of 12.31, Snyder placed 18th overall.
Freshman hurdler Christian ‘Ed' Awah of Willow Springs, Ill., earned dual victories in the 110 and 400-meter hurdles at the Spartan Open, the final tune-up meet prior to the this week's Midwest Collegiate Conference Outdoor Championships.
After being edged out in the prelims by senior teammate Franklin Barnes of Chicago, Awah brought home the victory with a time of 15.04.
Barnes finished in second place after crossing the line in 15.40.
The duo would compete against one another again in the 400-meter hurdles, as it was Awah again who took first place honors with a time of 56.31 while Barnes took fifth place after crossing the line in 58.90.
With at time of 1:01.27, sophomore Ademola Are of Hazel Crest, Ill., placed ninth in the 400-meter hurdles
Junior Andrew Drinkall of Hoopole, Ill., and sophomore Austin Gilbert of Peoria, Ill., went 2-3 in the 400-meter dash. With a time of 51.38, Drinkall finished slightly ahead of his teammate for second place, as Gilbert finished in a time of 51.55.
In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Aleksander Jakobsen of Rock Island, Ill., finished in ninth place with a time of 18:40.83.
After qualifying for the NAIA Men's Outdoor Track and Field National Championships last week, sophomore A.J. Smith of Port Byron, Ill., tied for first place after clearing 1.98 meters (6'6").
Smith also took sixth place honors in the javelin throw after a toss of 38.64 meters (126'9").
Freshman Jaryd Prince of Clinton capped off a great day for the Saints' throwers after earning a sixth place finish in the discus throw in a toss of 31.92 meters (104'9").
The Saints will wrap up the outdoor season this week with the Midwest Collegiate Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Grand View University in Des Moines. AshfordAthletics.com will travel with the team for full coverage of the meet.
