Austin Poindexter doubled, homered and singled three times in the Saints' game one win

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Junior Austin Poindexter of Bettendorf was a triple away from the cycle, Anthony Misitano of Sycamore, Ill., added four hits and Billy Becker of Peru, Ill., tossed a strong complete game to help the Ashford University baseball team split a doubleheader against Mt. Mercy College on Saturday.

Ashford played the role of spoiler in blustery conditions early on the Mustangs' Senior Day at Cedar Rapids-Xavier, winning 10-5, before falling in the finale, 7-1. Friday's originally scheduled nine-inning affair was postponed due to weather.

The Saints throttled Mt. Mercy for a season-high 20 hits in game one, putting together another all-around complete game that included no errors in the field.

Poindexter pounded out five hits in five trips to the plate, belting his first home run, an opposite-field solo shot in the second inning with two outs. He laced a double in the left-center gap in the first inning and executed a perfect bunt single past the infield already anticipating a sacrifice attempt.

With a shot at the coveted cycle in the latter stages, Poindexter recorded a pair of singles. He also scored four times.

Misitano capitalized from the cleanup spot in the lineup, driving home a pair of runs with a single up the middle in the seventh inning.

Junior Roman Davis added a solo blast of his own to lead off the second frame, his second of the year.

Becker was backed by a strong defensive effort and scattered six hits over seven innings. He induced a key double play in the sixth inning after yielding a leadoff single and retired the speedy Julius Frierson on strikes.

Matthew Mercier reached Becker for a two-run shot in the seventh, but the junior righty fanned catcher Rey Lopez on a swinging third strike to get his third win of the year. His game-ending punchout of Lopez marked his 40th strikeout of the season.

Ashford tagged Erik Morales for four runs on seven hits in just two innings.

Mt. Mercy enjoyed a strong performance by sophomore left-hander Reinaldo Rodriguez on the hill, quieting the Saints' bats to the tune of just three hits in game two. The Saints had their share of fielding issues down the stretch, committing five errors in second game.

Junior Jason Fletcher of Gilberts, Ill., accounted for the Saints' lone run with a sacrifice fly to deep center field in the third inning.

Rodriguez was tough on the Saints, striking out eight and working around three hit batsmen and a catcher's interference call against his own backstop.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Ken Charipar Field for an 11:30 a.m. start with Ashford concluding the regular season. A nine-inning game will be played before Mt. Mercy entertains Coe College for a non-conference affair.
