CLINTON, Iowa - The Ashford University men's bowling team and Head Coach Brian Swanson gained their sixth commitment for next fall's inaugural season, signing Shane Schaefer of Bettendorf.
Schaefer is the second bowler from Bettendorf High School to commit to the bowling program at Ashford, joining newcomer Ed Bowers, who signed in March.
"It's very exciting to receive the commitment to bowl from such a talented athlete like Shane," said Swanson. "His successes at Bettendorf will carry over when he arrives to campus and will be instrumental for our first season."
Schaefer was joined by several fellow classmates at the signing at Bettendorf High School, as they announced their college decisions as well.
Coached by Mike Kelly as a member of the BHS bowling team, Schaefer was named the team's Most Valuable Player during his junior season while also being a member of the Bulldogs' baseball squad.
It was during that same season that Schaefer bowled two perfect games.
As a senior, Schaefer would repeat as MVP of the bowling team and yet again bowled two perfect games. With a 222 average, Schaefer was named MAC First-Team All-Conference.
Outside of the bowling lanes, Schaefer enjoys playing baseball, ping pong and video games.
The son of Steve and Sheri Schaefer, Shane is a prospective criminal justice major when he arrives to campus, and chose Ashford over St. Ambrose University, Western Illinois University, and William Penn University.
