LA CROSSE, Wis. - A pair of solo home runs from seniors Tyler Sukut and Scott Schmitt wasn't enough offensive production as Ashford University's baseball team was routed by Viterbo University in Tuesday's series finale, 20-2, in seven innings.
The Saints (8-23, 3-14 MCC) left La Crosse, Wis., victims of a three-game sweep as the V-Hawks (19-14, 7-7 MCC) moved to .500 in conference play.
A five-run first inning gave Viterbo early momentum as the V-Hawks capitalized on two runners reaching base from infield errors. Kyle Dreger hit a two-run single and Blake Shepherd added a three-run homer in Viterbo's half of the first frame.
Ashford starter Matt King would rebound to throw back-to-back scoreless innings in the second and third frames, but the junior hit the first batter he faced to set the table for a V-Hawks' four-run fourth inning.
Schmitt's third home run of the season in the fourth put Ashford on the board and kept Viterbo within striking distance down by four runs.
Another four-run inning by Viterbo in the fifth faded an Ashford comeback hope despite Sukut's two-out solo shot in the fifth inning, his second of the year.
Viterbo starter Nick Lenzendorf scattered seven hits through seven innings and struck out six in the complete-game effort.
Infielder Brandon Van Blaricome returned to action for the first time since March 21 (Iowa Wesleyan College), sidelined with an MCL sprain and separated shoulder. Madison native and freshman pitcher Lucas Beese also made his first appearance since March, having started four games in the Saints' rotation before an injury.
The Saints travel to Des Moines on Friday for a nine-inning game against Grand View University at Dowling Catholic High School set to start at 5 p.m. Ashford is 1-1 this season against the Vikings, splitting a doubleheader on April 4.
