CLINTON, Iowa - Junior right-hander Billy Becker of Peru, Ill., scattered eight hits over nine innings, polishing off a complete-game gem as the Ashford University baseball team held off Waldorf College on Sunday at Alliant Energy Field, 5-2.
The Saints (13-26, 3-12 MCC) bounced back from a pair of
Saturday losses on Senior Day, riding the rubber arm of Becker and steady
defense to victory against the Warriors (15-23, 5-13 MCC).
Ashford also unveiled brand new goldenrod yellow uniforms embroidered with white lettering.
Youngsters from the Clinton Cobras were honored on Youth Baseball Day in a special pre-game ceremony that had them walking out with the Saints to their positions and receiving a game ball for future autographs.
"We had great starting pitching for all three games this weekend between Nick (Davis), Lucas (Beese) and now Bill," AU Head Coach John Govek said. "He mixed up his pitches well today, threw with great composure and kept us in this ballgame all the way."
Becker was tagged for a run in the first series of at-bats, but quickly settled down and showed complete control of the strike zone, fanning six while issuing just one free pass.
The Saints took advantage of WC starter Williams Lovera's wildness with a three-run second inning after Mike Ray of Sycamore, Ill., stole home in the first inning -- one of his four base thefts on the afternoon.
Junior Roman Davis of Gardnerville, Nev., came through in the clutch once again with a two-run single punched through the left side of the infield. Lovera subsequently beaned the next two hitters to load the bases and junior Austin Poindexter of Bettendorf drew the RBI walk to score Davis for a 4-1 AU lead.
Both offenses were relatively dormant in the middle innings and Becker retired the side in order in the second and seventh innings. He was a victim of his own pickoff attempt that went awry in the sixth, leading to a run on a sacrifice fly.
Waldorf had runners on second and third in the ninth frame after a hit batsmen and a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position.
But with the tying run represented in pinch hitter Jamie Smeigh at the plate with two outs, a diving Becker off-speed selection induced a slow infield chopper for the final out, a routine 6-3 grounder.
Davis, Poindexter and junior Jason Fletcher of Gilberts, Ill., each had two hits on the day.
Waldorf's Jeremy Trach led the Warriors' offense with three hits.
The Saints next head to Davenport for a 4 p.m. doubleheader against St. Ambrose University on Wednesday.
