ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Behind a co-medalist effort from Jordan Davis (81) of Delmar and Brittany Boon (81) of Bloomington, Ill., the Ashford University women's golf team put it all together on Thursday, outdistancing themselves from the pack at the Augustana Invitational.
The Saints won their first team title of the season, carding a team score of 347 at the par-72, 5,825-layout at Emeis Golf Course. Ashford had a staggering 26-stroke margin between the runner-up, a tie between University of Wisconsin-Platteville (373) and a junior varsity squad from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (373).
It marked the Saints' first team victory since the Loras College Invitational in the fall of the 2008-09 campaign.
With just one event before the all-important Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships and a potential trip to the NAIA National Tournament, it was just the kind of breakout performance AU Head Coach Josh Davis was looking for.
"This was a great win for the team," Davis said. "We fought through the win and played pretty smart shots all day. Hopefully this can build some confidence going forward."
The Saints received a career-best score from freshman Alanna Harris of Bloomington-Normal, Ill., with a 92 to place solo eighth, her first top-10 finish. She bested her previous best 18-hole score by three strokes, a 95 recorded in the first round of the St. Ambrose Classic back in September.
Sophomore Felicia Scott of Waterloo also had a top-10 finish to her credit with a tie for ninth. She ended with a 93. Freshmen Ashley Crawford (100) of Rockford, Ill., and Megan Wagner (105) of Preston, tied for 28th and 37th, respectively.
"I'm extremely happy for Alanna shooting her career best and coming through today," Davis added. "We have had solid contributions from all players this spring."
The Saints pack up their clubs for Thunder Hills Country Club and the two-day Clarke College Invitational this Saturday and Sunday. That sets the stage for the MCC Championships in Ankeny April 24-25 at Otter Creek Golf Course.
