
MACOMB, Ill. - Competing at the 21st annual Lee Calhoun Invitational, the Ashford University women's track and field team captured a victory and set a new school record in the 4x200-meter relay while taking 11th place overall on the Western Illinois University campus.
Freshman Chhutani Berry of Chicago, Ill., tied a school record by clearing 1.57 meters (5'1") to finish third out of 25 individuals in the high jump.
"She has the frame to be a great athlete and as she gets better in the weight room, we'll see more performances like this one," AU Head Coach Chris Adams said.
Senior Kim Fabry of Oconto Falls, Wis., freshman Nkemdilim Okwumabua of Rockford, Ill., freshman Sarah Wenzel of Clinton, and sophomore Laura Minertz of Sterling, Ill., finished nearly a second and a half ahead of the runner-up unit in the 4x200-meter relay, crossing the line in a new school record time of 1:46.75.
It marked the second time this season that the Saints have broken the event record.
The same quartet of Saints competed in the 1,600-meter sprint medley race as well, finishing in 4:19.55 to take home second-place honors.
Minertz and Fabry ran with each other in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes as well. Minertz took sixth-place honors in the 200 with a time of 26.67 and earned three points towards Ashford's overall finish while Fabry finished in 27.99, good for 15th.
In the 400-meter dash, Minertz finished in ninth place after crossing the line in 1:02.12, while Fabry earned 13th with a time of 1:04.75.
With a time of 3:21.71, freshman Ashley Murray of Iowa City took 31st in the 800-meter run.
In the long jump, Wenzel leaped 5.07 meters (16'7") for a ninth-place finish while Fabry finished 11th after a jump of 4.97 meters (16'3").
Competing in the triple jump as well, Wenzel took 12th after jumping 10.06 meters (33")
In the shot put, freshman Ashley Voeltz of Fulton, Ill., finished 20th after a toss of 11.38 meters (37'4").
The Saints travel to Lisle, Ill. for the Eagle Invitational next weekend, hosted by Benedictine University.
