CLINTON, Iowa - Together for one final time as a team, the 2009-10 Ashford University women's basketball program joined for a dinner and former AU Head Coach Chris Powers announced the individual team awards this week during an awards banquet.

"They were a fun group to be around and I look forward to seeing how successful they will become after their athletic careers are complete and they have graduated," said Powers. "There are girls on this team that have some bright futures ahead of them."

Seniors Bethany Mahmens of Goose Lake, Kelly Fisher of Fremont, Calif., Kim Fabry of Oconto Falls, Wis., and junior Jordan Davis of Delmar, were named captains of the squad.

Mahmens, an Honorable Mention All-MCC player during the season, was given the Coaches Award as well. Mahmens certainly left her mark on the Saints' records books, becoming only the fourth student-athlete in AU history to reach 1,000 career points.

In addition to her being named a team captain, Fabry was also honored by Powers as the Most Valuable Player and shared Best Defender awards with sophomore Whitney Miller of Clinton. Fabry, who is competing this spring with the track and field program, averaged 8.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a senior.

Junior guard Heather Hoge of Camanche and freshman guard Carrie McDonald of Indianapolis, Ind., shared the Most Improved Award.

Powers, who announced in early March that he will be stepping down from the helm of Ashford University women's basketball, feels that the program is headed in the right direction.

"I wish Ashford University and all of the athletic teams nothing but success in the future," said Powers. "I believe with everything that is available now that all of the athletic teams at Ashford University will reach new heights in the very near future."
