ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Junior Roman Davis of Gardnerville, Nev., drove in six runs on a three-run homer and a bases-clearing triple while Lucas Beese of Middleton, Wis., recorded a complete game win on the mound, highlighting the Ashford University baseball team's split doubleheader over West Virginia Tech on Monday.
The Saints claimed game two, 11-7, after being on the short end against the Golden Bears (4-8 overall) of a 14-8 contest in Monday's opener.
Junior infielder Demetric Turner of Eufaula, Ala., added a solo shot in the fifth inning as Ashford (2-8 overall) cashed in 11 runs on 12 hits in its second win of the young spring season down at the Florida Collegiate Jamboree.
Sophomore Cameron Puetz of Peru, Ill., had the Saints' first home run of the season in game one, a three-run shot to left center field to highlight an eight-hit offensive attack.
"I'm really proud of our guys for battling up at the plate and making every at-bat count," AU Head Coach John Govek said. "There were a lot of promising signs from today and we'll look to extend that throughout the rest of the week and into the conference schedule."
The Golden Bears scored runs in all six innings of game one as AU starter J.D. Fabian (0-1) of Highland, Ind., struggled with command early on. He walked the first two batters he faced and hit the next hitter as WVT grabbed an early two-run lead in the first inning.
Fabian exited after facing his third batter in the third and was charged with six runs, all earned, on five hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched.
WVT ripped off a five-run fourth frame, but Ashford slowly clawed its way back into contention on the back of Puetz in the fifth inning and sophomore Michael Caravia of Norridge, Ill., plated another run on a sacrifice fly.
Freshman transfer Michael Bruns of La Porte City also delivered an RBI single with the bases loaded in a pinch-hit situation, his first at-bat while at Ashford.
But Beese went the distance in the finale, getting encouraging run support as the Saints' bats exploded for five runs in the first inning against Golden Bears' starter Brett Kemerer.
AU loaded up the bases against Kemerer and he walked in the first run after junior Jason Fletcher of Huntley, Ill., drew a walk. Kemerer ran into more trouble after letting another run score when he drilled Turner with a pitch.
With the bases still loaded, Davis laced a line drive past a diving defender in left field and all three runs came around to score as the ball dribbled up to the fence.
Ashford then peppered submarine reliever Jeff Krauklis for four more runs, all in the sixth inning, highlighted by Davis' bomb, a towering blast that disappeared into a grove of trees over the fence.
Turner had set the table earlier with a chopper for an RBI single through the left side of the Golden Bears' infield.
Bettendorf natives Brandon VanBlaricome and Austin Poindexter each had two hits apiece.
Beese (2-0) allowed seven hits in the complete-game effort, striking out one and yielding four earned runs while walking just one. He was also on the mound in AU's first win of the season at Doane College (Neb.).
The Saints continue their trip in the Sunshine State early tomorrow with another doubleheader, this time against Mount Vernon Nazarene College (Ohio). The first game is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
