AU Head Coach John Govek and Tommie Garton III Pose During The Signing

BETTENDORF, Iowa - Before leaving the Midwest to pursue warmer weather in Florida for Spring Break, the Ashford University baseball team added a new member to their roster for next year.

Earlier this week, Tommie Garton III of Pleasant Valley, Iowa signed his letter of intent to play for the Saints. Garton III is the first prospect to commit to Head Coach John Govek's program for the 2011 season.

"Tommie has potential to be a really good college hitter," said Govek. "He gives us a left-handed stick we have been missing and he does a nice job hitting to all fields."

Coached by Rob Wood, Garton III is used as a utility position player at Pleasant Valley High School, having seen playing time at pitcher, first base, and in the outfield for the Spartans. Academically, Garton III received High Honors all four years during his tenure at Pleasant Valley High School.

"He also does a great job in the classroom which is nice," added Govek. "We welcome his work ethic and are excited to see what he can do."

An advocate of hunting, fishing, and drag racing, Garton III is the son of Tom and Sheryl Garton. He chose Ashford over Black Hawk College and is planning to major in business next fall.
