OMAHA, Neb. - The Ashford University baseball team hit the road again and picked up its first win of the year sandwiched in a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend against Doane College (Neb.) played at Westside High School.
The Saints (1-5 overall, 0-0 MCC) went 1-3 on the trip, winning 9-1 on Saturday. Doane kept Ashford off the scoreboard in the other three games by scores of 5-0, 4-0 and 9-0, including a no-hitter tossed in the first contest of Sunday's twinbill by Tigers' ace Dexter Spitsnogle.
"The season is still young and there is still time to correct some issues before we get into the heart of the schedule," AU Head Coach John Govek said. "We did some good things in our win and showed a glimpse of what this team is capable of on offense and defense."
Freshman outfielder Taylor Boyer of Billings, Mont., delivered a pair of hits, including a two-run go-ahead double in the fourth inning of the Saints' rout. The Saints scored in three consecutive innings after the Tigers scored in their first series of at-bats.
Junior infielder Adam Wojciechowski of La Salle, Ill., drew a pair of walks and came around to score three times. His leadoff walk in the sixth inning set the stage for some insurance in the late stages.
Ashford
tacked on five more runs in the sixth frame, highlighted by a two-run single
from junior infielder Brandon VanBlaricome of Bettendorf. Junior catcher Jason Fletcher of Huntley, Ill., plated another
run after an RBI single by junior Demetric Turner of Eufaula, Ala.
The Saints rode the arm of sophomore hurler Lucas Beese (1-0) of Middleton, Wis., to the tune of five strong innings. He yielded one run on five hits and four walks in his first start of the season.
Junior reliever Hunter Allspaugh of Chadwick, Ill., tossed two scoreless innings to close out AU's first win.
Spitsnogle twirled his hitless gem in game three, fanning five and issuing three walks to spoil a stellar outing by AU junior starter Nick Davis of Walnut, Ill.
Davis was tagged with just one earned run through six innings of work and he also recorded five punchouts in his second start of the season.
But the Saints' bats were quieted in the fourth game as Ryan Otto scattered five hits in five frames. Ashford was also unable to score and generated just four hits off Doane starter Jaco Cathey in Saturday's opener.
Josh Reed belted a grand slam in the final game to help Doane put up seven combined runs in the third and fourth innings. The Saints were outhit just 6-5, but command issues by senior starter Matt King of Shafter, Calif., led to an exit after 3 1/3 innings.
The Saints leave for sunny Ormond Beach, Fla., on Thursday to open up their Spring Break trip on Friday morning against Ohio Dominican College at 10 a.m. That game will be the first of a dozen non-conference matchups scheduled throughout the following week.
