STERLING, Ill. - The rising Ashford University women's track and field team shattered additional school records and league marks on Saturday while making its presence felt at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Indoor Championships.
The Saints finished fourth among the seven-team field, accumulating 99 points. Grand View University claimed the women's title with 203 points, respectively. This year's conference championship format was the second instance, replacing the MCC Invitational, a regular-season meet.
A total of four Ashford student-athletes brought home All-MCC honors, representing first place in their respective events. A trio of school records went down and four MCC Championship standards were also toppled by the Saints.
"Going into the meet, the goal was for the women to score 100 points, regardless of what place they would finish," AU Head Coach Chris Adams said. "And although they were one point short, they still exceeded my expectations. This is such a young and talented team. Nearly every athlete who competed scored at least one point."
Competing in the comfort of her hometown, sophomore speedster Laura Minertz of Sterling added a 200-meter dash MCC title to her list of accomplishments. She clocked in at 26.51 seconds, bettering her own indoor school mark set earlier this year (26.79 at Sol Butler Classic).
Minertz also added a fourth-place finish with five points in the 55-meter dash (7.47). She also finished runner-up in the 400-meter dash, capping a busy day.
Versatile freshman and NAIA National Championships qualifier Nkemdilim Okwumabua of Rockford, Ill., grabbed All-MCC honors in the 400 and 600-meter dashes. She set a new MCC meet record in the 600-meter race at 1:40.53, beating Carley Freund's (Clarke College) old mark of 1:40.82.
Okwumabua also finished third in the 800-meter run at 2:26.52.
Freshman thrower Ashley Voeltz of Fulton, Ill., broke her own school record in shot put, finishing fourth with a hurl of 11.77m. Her throw brought home five points to the AU team standings.
As has been the case throughout the year, the Saints displayed what is arguably the best set of jumpers in the MCC with Heather Ketcham of Byron, Ill., Natalie Solms of Kissimmee, Fla., and Clinton's Sarah Wenzel.
The NAIA-qualifying Ketcham finished runner-up in the high jump despite matching the winning height of Mt. Mercy's Larissa Wilden (1.57m). She still broke the MCC meet record, formerly 1.52m set by Grand View's Courtney Casper.
Solms ran away with All-MCC honors in triple jump at 10.74m, setting another MCC meet record. She also fared well in high jump, tying teammate Chhutani Berry of Chicago as each brought home 2.5 points in the event.
Wenzel broke her own school record in the long jump and took home first place with a leap of 5.23m. She was just .05m away from breaking the MCC meet record, set by Marla Milroy of St. Ambrose.
The Saints compete at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on Feb. 19 before sending their qualifiers to the NAIA National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn., on March 4-6.
