CLINTON, Iowa - Samantha Darley had a game-high 16 points to lead three players in double figures and William Penn University pulled away from the Ashford University women's basketball team in the second half en route to a 68-58 win.

Senior guard Kelly Fisher of Fremont, Calif., added 12 points and senior forward Bethany Mahmens of Goose Lake contributed 10 for Ashford, who dropped its second straight contest.

"We did some good things in the first half and tried to control the tempo," AU Head Coach Chris Powers said. "We lost track a little bit early on in the second half and that ultimately cost us in the end tonight."

There were seven ties in the first half, with neither team able to get much separation. Ashford led by as many as four and William Penn's largest lead was just three until the final basket of the half.

A steal by junior Kayla Crist of Stanwood translated into a layup for Weaver that put the Saints up 14-10 at the 14:27 mark.

But the Saints were held scoreless for the final 3:36 in the first half after a pair of free throws by Weaver. The Lady Statesmen went on a mini 4-0 run for a five-point edge at the break, capped on a jumper by Darley.

William Penn rode that momentum to a 9-2 run to open the second half as Darley hit a trey and jumper on the baseline. Christa Subbert, who added 13 points, finished the run with two free throws that gave the Lady Statesmen a double-digit advantage.

Subbert made all of her seven attempts from the charity stripe.

Ashford was able to cut the deficit to five on a backdoor layup by Fisher with about 10 minutes remaining, but Darley made three of her final four free throw attempts to preserve the William Penn win.
