CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Ashford University men's track and field team put on another stirring display at the Jack Jennett Invitational over the weekend, setting more student-athletes on the brink of qualifying for the NAIA National Championships.
Junior Andrew Drinkall of Hooppole, Ill., shattered a pair of school records in the 600 and 1,000-meter runs and sophomore heptathlete Aaron Yerk of Belvidere, Ill., broke his own record with 4,363 points to finish second.
Sophomore speedster Austin Gilbert of Peoria, Ill., also just missed qualifying for the national meet in the 400-meter dash and freshman thrower Spencer Touchie of Hometown, Ill., returned to action after sitting out with a knee injury.
There was only one event scored for the team standings.
"Today was a brutal reminder of how little room for error there can be for chasing those nationals marks," AU Head Coach Chris Adams said. "Andrew (Drinkall) still has a couple more shots at qualifying and if he races like today, I'm confident that he'll be able to hit the mark. He's a tough competitor."
"We competed well in the majority of the events today and did so against some good teams, including a handful of (NCAA) Div. I programs and a very talented Iowa Central squad," he added.
Drinkall, an NAIA National Cross Country qualifier, was just a mere .08 seconds from the provisional national qualifying mark in the 600-meter run. He broke his own record in the 1,000-meter run and edged out Curtis Vais' decade-long mark in the 600-meter run he set in 2000.
Drinkall now owns school records in the 600, 800 and 1,000-meter runs while also sharing the 4x300-meter relay top mark. He took fifth in both the 600 and 800-meter runs on Saturday, respectively.
Yerk bettered his own heptathlon record set in the season-opening Pre-Holiday Classic in Kearney, Neb. His point total of 4,363 on Friday was better than his effort in Nebraska by 15 points as he took third in the 60-meter dash and second in pole vault.
Gilbert took fourth in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 51.30. He already holds school records in the 200-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay this year.
Touchie finished fifth in his first meet since the Carthage Opener in Wisconsin. He threw 15.40m in a field of 26 individuals.
Senior Caleb Snyder of Winnebago, Ill., finished in the top half of the field in long jump with a distance of 6.48m.
The Saints head to a return site this weekend in Jacksonville, Ill., for the Illinois College Open. AU competed at the Snowbird Open earlier this year.
