CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Another event gone by, another Ashford University student-athlete sent to the biggest stage of the indoor track and field season.
Freshman Nkemdilim "Kemi" Okwumabua of Rockford, Ill., etched her name into the record books for two more events and automatically qualified for the NAIA Championships in the 600-meter dash at the Jack Jennett Invitational on Friday/Saturday in the UNI-Dome.
"We competed well in the majority of events here, and did so against some good teams including a handful of (NCAA) Div. I programs and a very talented Iowa Central squad," AU Head Coach Chris Adams said.
Only one event was tracked for team scoring.
Okwumabua shattered her own record in the 600-meter dash at 1:38.36, passing the NAIA "A" standard qualifying time. She also broke the 60-meter hurdle school record with a time of 11.21 on Saturday, passing Datisha Duncan's mark set last winter.
Okwumabua also competed in her first career pentathlon on Friday, racking up 2,427 points to finish sixth. She now joins freshman high jumper Heather Ketcham of Byron, Ill., on the women's side to qualify for the national meet.
Okwumabua has hit the reset button on five different records (60-meter hurdles, 600-meter run, 800-meter run, 1,000-meter run and 4x400-meter relay) in her first year with the Saints.
Her strongest event in the pentathlon was the 800-meter run, good for third.
"We knew she (Kemi) would have a chance at reaching nationals in several events, but we weren't sure which one would be her best," Adams said. "She's done everything that has been asked of her, especially this weekend, and that's all you can ask for."
Sophomore Laura Minertz of Sterling, Ill., crossed the line at 8.20 seconds to take sixth in the 60-meter dash while also finishing seventh out of 27 in the 200-meter dash (26.86). She also finished in the top 10 in the 400-meter dash.
Ketcham cleared 1.55m to take runner-up honors in the high jump, the event she provisionally qualified for the NAIA Championships earlier this season. Sophomore Natalie Solms of Kissimmee, Fla., finished right behind Ketcham, respectively, at 1.50m to place fourth.
The Saints head back to Jacksonville, Ill., for the Illinois College Open this weekend. AU competed recently at the same site for the Snowbird Open.
