In a series of brief recaps, AshfordAthletics.com is taking time to reflect on some key moments from its athletic programs during the fall season. In this next segment, AA.com focuses on men's and women's golf.
Men's Golf
For someone who has never seen snow before or weathered temperatures colder than 50 degrees, seeing the first dusting of the white powder in Iowa was an eye-opener for 18-year old freshman and Thailand native Nac Huachai.
Huachai returned to Thailand and warm weather over the winter break so his jaw would probably drop at the accumulated snowfall in Clinton at present, but he calmly led the Saints' linksters despite arriving to campus a week after classes commenced.
Moving up from Windermere, Fla., a city well-documented in recent memory because of the Tiger Woods' debacle, Huachai was named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Player of the Week and recorded a number of top-10 finishes. He will be looking to make a strong run in the spring at the MCC Tournament that could result in a bid at the NAIA National Championships.
Huachai anchored Ashford with a 75.3 stroke average, taking second at the Iowa Wesleyan Fun Classic, and was complemented by fellow rookie Lucas Mulholland. They were flanked by seniors Tyler Sukut and Mike Reddersdorf regularly in the lineup.
Sukut and Reddersdorf have moved on after graduating in December and underclassmen Justin Fritz, Klark Sikkema and Colt Ostrum will look to step up and fill their void to provide stability before the Midwest Collegiate Conference in the spring.
Ashford performed admirably at the Loras Fall Invitational, its second event of the season, as Mulholland tied for fifth. The Saints finished a fall-best third carded a team single-round low of 330 at The Meadows Golf Course.
Women's Golf
We can just cut to the chase.
Jordan Davis clearly established herself as the top threat to repeat as the individual Midwest Collegiate Conference champion. After becoming the first golfer in school history to qualify for the NAIA National Championships in 2008-09, she is blazing a path to repeat the elusive feat.
The dominant junior simply left the conference opposition in the dust this fall, claiming medalist honors from three different tournaments and combined with teammate Brittany Boon for a win at the Mt. Mercy Best Ball Event.
Also the starting point guard for the Saints' women's basketball team, Davis was named MCC Player of the Week in mid-September.
Without St. Ambrose's Kelly Jansen in the picture, Davis will be a heavy favorite to hoist first-place hardware at the conference tourney this spring. She won at events hosted by Iowa Wesleyan, St. Ambrose and Augustana College, while also competing unattached via invitation at the Hawkeye Collegiate in Iowa City.
But, as evidenced by AU's 18-hole scoring record at the St. Ambrose Fall Classic, Davis had plenty of help and the Saints appear poised as ever to make a run at the conference title as a team.
Sophomore Brittany Boon finished third in St. Ambrose event and the 2008-09 All-MCC pick provided more than her share of consistency during the fall. Freshmen Megan Wagner, Alanna Harris and Ashley Crawford, also improved their scores from each tournament to the next while breaking into the collegiate ranks, a trend that Head Coach Josh Davis couldn't be happier with.
