WHITING, Ind. - The Ashford University women's basketball team enjoyed an opening-round win at the Crimson Wave Invite on Friday, advancing to the finals after beating Mid-Continent College (Ky.), 64-54.

The Saints have their sights set on its second tournament win of the year, nearly a month removed after winning the Lakeshore Tip-Off Classic hosted by Silver Lake College.

AU will face host Calumet College of St. Joseph in the finals on Saturday, with a start time at 2 p.m.

Senior forward Bethany Mahmens of Goose Lake hit the 1,000-career point mark, becoming just the fourth player in school history to achieve the statistical milestone. She led Ashford in scoring along with junior guard Jordan Davis of Delmar, each contributing 10 points.

Ashford received all-around balanced scoring and were able to preserve a four-point halftime lead.

Junior guard Kayla Crist of Stanwood added nine points off the bench, senior guard Kelly Fisher of Fremont, Calif., scored eight and sophomore guard Whitney Miller of Clinton filled the stat sheet with six points, four steals and three assists.

The Saints get their second shot at the Crimson of CCSJ, a one-point buzzer-beater loss at home early in the season still on their minds. The Crimson defeated Marygrove College (Mich.) in the other opening-round game.
