WHITING, Ind. - The Ashford University women's basketball fell just short of bringing home its second tournament title of the year, falling in the Crimson Wave Invite finals to Calumet College of St. Joseph on Saturday, 80-73.
For their
performances, seniors Kelly Fisher of Fremont,
Calif., and Shel'si Weaver of
Beloit, Wis., were selected to the all-tournament team.
CCSJ's Jackie Feldpausch was named Most Outstanding Player.
It was the second meeting between the two schools this season and represented a chance for Ashford to avenge a Nov. 14 one-point home loss.
Ashford finished 1-1 at the two-day tourney, advancing to the final game after beating Mid-Continent College (Ky.) on Friday. Also in attendance was Marygrove College (Mich.), which fell victim to CCSJ on Friday.
The Saints grabbed a title at the Lakeshore Tip-Off Classic in November, where Weaver and Fisher were also all-tournament team picks.
"I don't think offense was the problem in this game," AU Head Coach Chris Powers said. "We struggled with defensive intensity in the second half and weren't able to get the stops that we needed."
Weaver scored 14 of her season-high 23 points in the first half to help the Saints take a four-point lead into the break. Fisher and senior Kim Fabry of Oconto Falls, Wis., each added 10 points.
The Saints led big in the early stages, grabbing a 14-point advantage after a pair of free throws by Weaver with just over seven minutes to go in the first half.
But the host Crimson fought back and chipped into the lead with a 12-2 run right before halftime and AU's lone scoring in the final five minutes came from sophomore guard Whitney Miller of Clinton.
CCSJ shot over a blistering 70 percent (19-for-27) from the field in the second half.
After both teams exchanged baskets early in the final frame, the Crimson took the lead for good with 14 minutes remaining.
Ashford would close within six on a basket by senior Jessie Rosenow of Erie, Ill., but Feldpausch would respond with a jumper on CCSJ's next possession.
Feldpausch led all scorers with 24 points.
The Saints return home for a non-conference game on Tuesday against Rockford College in Kehl Arena. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
