KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A season laden with various awards was punctuated with NAIA Honorable Mention All-American honors for Ashford University women's soccer goalkeeper Kylie Willet of East Moline, Ill., as teams were unveiled last week.
Willet was
selected by a voting committee as three teams and an honorable mention unit was
released.
She is the second AU student-athlete to receive NAIA All-American recognition this fall, joining men's soccer player Geraldo Garza of Rockford, Ill.
Willet adds to a tradition-rich program and is AU Head Coach Mick Regan's first All-American in his five-year tenure. She became the fifth player in the program to receive All-American honors, tops among all Ashford sports in school history.
The junior is the program's first All-American since 2001 when Megan Miller earned the national recognition. Willet also joins Cindy Musters (2001), Stacy Puchta (1999, 2000) and Emily Hurley (1999, 2000) in the rare company.
"As the
year went on, it became apparent that Kylie could play at a high, consistent
level week-in and week-out," Regan said. "To become an All-American, you need
to turn coaches' heads."
"I'm over the moon for her because she rode the bench when (former All-MCC) Holly (Maskell) was here, went through adversity and is well deserving of her honors this year at goalkeeper."
Willet was also recently presented with Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, adding to a number of impressive awards she has collected this season.
In addition, Willet was named the NAIA National Player of the Week of the week ending Sept. 14 and was named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions.
Willet carried that season-long momentum to First Team All-MCC honors and was a stabilizing force in net all year for the Saints. She recorded five shutouts, including a head-turning blanking over then-No. 8 Trinity Christian College that had Ashford receiving votes in the national polls the following week.
Willet held
teams scoreless for a stretch of over 350 minutes in Trinity Christian, (played the first
half) Calumet College of St. Joseph and Mt.
Mercy College, Knox College and Cornell College, en route to five straight
shutouts.
