LA CROSSE, Wis. - A late shot with three seconds left on the clock fell through the net for Viterbo University's Nick Stilwell and halted a four-game win streak by the Ashford University (8-4, 1-1 MCC) men's basketball team on Saturday.

The V-Hawks clipped the Saints, 68-66, after successfully defending the ensuing inbounds play and a desperation heave by Ashford fell short as time expired.

The loss was AU's first in Midwest Collegiate Conference play and put the Saints in a pack of five teams tied at 1-1 in the league.

Junior guard Devin Ehrich of Thomson, Ill., posted a team-high 15 points off the bench in 17 minutes. He hit five of his six shots from the floor and connected on three three-point field goals.

Ehrich led three Saints in double digits, joined by senior backcourt mates Daniel Joiner (11) of West Chicago, Ill., and Byron Emerson (Ill.) of Rockford, Ill.

Emerson tied the game at 66-all after drawing a foul on a drive with 13 seconds left on the clock. Following a V-Hawks' timeout, Eric Ambrose found a cutting teammate in Stilwell for the game-winning bucket.

After Ashford moved out to a narrow 20-17 lead in the first half, Viterbo countered with a 9-1 run before the Saints whittled the deficit to all square, heading into the half tied at 32.

The Saints opened the second half on fire from long range hitting three of their 12 trifectas to open the final frame to lead 41-32.

On their heels, Viterbo fired back with 10-0 run to take the lead again and from that point on, neither team would lead by more than four points.

Ehrich had his best outing since the regular-season opener when he scored 17 points against Crossroads College. His precision from long range helped the Saints go 12-for-30 from three-point territory.

Like Ehrich in a reserve role, sophomore Peter Tanzillo of Kewanee, Ill., put together an all-around efficient outing. He scored eight points off the bench and swatted a season-high five shots.

Ashford has a week off before traveling for a non-conference bout against Loras College next Saturday. Tip is set for 4 p.m.
