MANITOWOC, Wis. - The Ashford University (4-2, 0-0 MCC) women's basketball christened the school's trophy case by bringing home crystal hardware at the Lakeshore Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday. The Saints downed the University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac in the finals, 76-48, on the campus of Silver Lake College.
Senior guard Kelly Fisher of Fremont, Calif., was named the Lakeshore Tip-Off Tournament Most Valuable Player after scoring a combined 25 points in two games. Senior forward Shel'si Weaver of Beloit, Wis., also received all-tournament recognition.
AU advanced to the finals game after defeating Bethany Lutheran University on Friday evening and the Falcons of Fond du Lac edged host Silver Lake, also on Friday.
"I'm proud of the team for stepping up the way it did in the second half," AU Head Coach Chris Powers said. "We received great contributions up and down the lineup and a lot of players were able to get on the court."
Heading into the half tied at 31-all, Powers and Saints put the clamps on Fond du Lac defensively, holding the Falcons to just 17 points in the second half.
AU made all four of its three-point field goal tries and shot a crisp 49.2 percent from the floor for the game.
Fisher was just one rebound shy of a double-double, hauling in seven on the defensive glass to go along with 14 points. She was perfect from the charity stripe in six attempts and also dished out four assists.
Weaver and junior guard Kayla Crist of Stanwood led the Saints with 16 points apiece while UWFDL's Nicole Sinnen led all players with 20 points.
The Saints return home on Tuesday to host Cardinal Stritch University on AU Community Kids Night in Kehl Arena. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
