CANTON, Mo. - A collective effort from the Ashford University (6-3, 0-0 MCC) men's basketball team led the Saints to their second consecutive win over a NAIA Div. I opponent at the Culver-Stockton Classic on Saturday, this time over Missouri Baptist University, 91-79.
Ashford was coming off an upset victory over No. 19 Div. I foe Columbia College on Friday night and polished off an unbeaten trip into the "Show Me State" against the Spartans (3-5 overall).
There was no all-tournament team selected.
Senior guard Daniel Joiner of West Chicago, Ill., scored a season-high 29 points and moved into solo fourth in the school's all-time scoring list. Joiner needed 12 points to pass former Mount St. Clare guard Marcus Harris after AU's win on Friday night.
Already passing Harris and current AU women's basketball/men's golf Head Coach Chris Powers among career scoring leaders this season, Joiner now has his sights set on Jason Wheat (1997-01), who racked up 1,388 points in his four-year career.
Joiner currently has 1,335 points in his career, putting him 54 shy of passing Wheat, a former two-time NAIA All-American.
"I'm proud of the team's effort this weekend," Saints' Head Coach Andy Eberhart said. "We went up against a pair of quality teams in a road environment and played very well. The key will be to carry the momentum into conference play in December and work on building off these games."
Joiner, who has scored in double digits in eight of nine games this year, had plenty of offensive help.
Senior guard Byron Emerson of Rockford, Ill., was efficient from the floor and dropped in 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
Sophomore Rashad Carrington of Milwaukee, Wis., was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time this season and nearly had a triple-double with 18 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.
AU took a nine-point lead heading into halftime and led by as many as 20 following a three-point shot by junior guard Devin Ehrich of Thomson, Ill. Missouri Baptist wouldn't come any closer than a 10-point margin after Ehrich's trey.
Junior guard Mike Relerford of Rockford, Ill., was out of the lineup due to an ankle injury sustained against Columbia on Friday. No timetable has been set for a return.
Ashford returns back to its home court in Kehl Arena tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. against the University of St. Francis. That game will follow the women's contest against Cardinal Stritch University set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
