CLINTON, Iowa - A driving layup from the top of the key by Whitney Bonham with six seconds remaining sunk the Ashford University (1-2, 0-0 MCC) women's basketball team, 61-60, and its bid for back-to-back wins on Saturday against Calumet College of St. Joseph (4-1, 0-0 CCAC).
AU freshman guard, Kaela Hunt of Indianapolis, Ind., who led Ashford with 14 points, had her layup attempt fall errant as time expired on the other end.
Ashford was coming off its first win of the season against Trinity Christian College on Tuesday.
"We ran into a very good team from Calumet College of St. Joseph, but we missed too many layups, too many free throws and gave up two critical defensive rebounds towards the end," AU Head Coach Chris Powers said.
The Saints took the lead by one on a three-point play with 17 seconds left by senior guard Kelly Fisher of Fremont, Calif., after she converted her attempt from the free-throw line and absorbed contact on a tough shot in the paint.
But Bonham and the Crimson Wave responded following a timeout as she went glass and hit an off-balance floater driving to her right after the ball rattled around the cylinder for the game winner.
Hunt led another balanced scoring effort for Ashford as five players ended in double figures.
Senior Shel'si Weaver of Beloit, Wis., produced 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting, Fisher and senior guard Kim Fabry of Oconto Falls, Wis., added 10 apiece, and junior Jordan Davis of Delmar chipped in 11.
Ashford led by five with over 12 minutes to go after a free throw by Fabry, but a three-point field goal by CCSJ's Candace Bishop and a jumper by Lydia Aceviz following an AU turnover, knotted things up at 42-all in a span of seven seconds.
The Saints struggled at the line, making just 50 percent (9-18) of their attempts and were 38 percent from the field.
AU came into today shooting 49.5 percent after games against Graceland University and Trinity Christian College.
CCSJ guards Aceviz and Lisa Upshaw combined for over half of their team's scoring, netting 15 and 17 points each, respectively.
"The effort from the girls was outstanding," Powers said. "We were able to get scores when we needed them even though our offense was a little stagnant coming out of the half. We'll bounce back and get ready for a good Judson (University) squad on Wednesday."
The Saints host the Eagles of Judson on Wednesday in Kehl Arena with game time set for 7 p.m. in Kehl Arena.
