PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. - Senior guard Kim Fabry of Oconto Falls, Wis., led four players in double digits with a game-high 18 points and the Ashford University (1-1, 0-0 MCC) women's basketball team picked up its first win of the year against Trinity Christian College (0-4) on Tuesday, 75-64.
The Saints kept the Trolls of Trinity Christian out of the win column with an impressive performance from the floor, connecting on 54 percent of its field goal attempts.
Senior guard Kelly Fisher of Fremont, Calif., added 15 points, freshman Kaela Hunt of Indianapolis poured in 10 off the bench.
Senior forward Bethany Mahmens of Goose Lake moved closer to the 1,000 career point milestone by contributing 11 points. She is sitting at 948 points in her career to date after opening the season with a nine-point outing at Graceland University.
"We had a great balanced scoring effort tonight and we were very efficient from the field," AU Head Coach Chris Powers said. "I'm proud of the team for playing hard in a road environment and we'll look to keep building from here."
Fabry was just four points shy of tying her previous career-high of 22 points last year against William Penn University. She drained seven of her attempts from the field and recorded Ashford's lone block.
Fisher tied her career-high scoring output in the season opener with 23 points at Graceland and produced another solid statline against the Trolls. She made her one try from three-point territory, led her team in rebounds with seven and shot 60 percent from the field (6-of-10).
Trinity Christian was led by Shakyia Vassar's 18 points. Laura Karr added 11 in a reserve role.
Just like the men's game against Judson University tonight, the Saints' only deficit was off the game's opening field goal on a jumper by TCC's Emily Butler.
AU controlled the tempo right after Butler's go-ahead field goal and led by as many as 15 on a layup by Fisher with 11 minutes left in the second half.
The Saints led by double digits for most of the remainder of the game and had an answer to every offensive Trinity Christian possession.
Ashford is off until Saturday when Calumet College of St. Joseph makes a visit to Kehl Arena for the Saints' home opener. Tip is set for 1 p.m.
