CLINTON, Iowa - As voted by the Ashford University head coaches, men's soccer goalkeeper Nick Roman of Belvidere, Ill., and volleyball middle hitter Kelsay McCausland of Camanche were chosen as the Jimmy John's October Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Month.

Roman was a steady force in net for the regular season conference champion Saints to collect seven wins in October, including five shutout victories. He currently has AU at the top of the NAIA rankings in total shutouts with 11, accounting for 10.

Roman earned Midwest Collegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week recognition twice (weeks of Oct. 12, 26) and allowed just two goals in Ashford's seven wins. He recorded six saves in games against St. Ambrose University, William Penn University and University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Roman opened October by making a season-best nine saves against Grand View University on the road in a double-overtime tie. On the year, he has a paltry 0.55 goals against average and has 64 saves to his credit.

Roman and the 25th-ranked Saints will head into the semifinals of the MCC Tournament this weekend, hosting Mt. Mercy College on Sunday.

McCausland has established herself as one of the most efficient hitters in the conference this year. She went over the 1,000 career kill mark against the University of Dubuque and currently paces the MCC in service aces and is eighth nationally with 68.

McCausland recorded a season-high 18 kills against McKendree College (Oct. 24) at the St. Ambrose Fall Classic. Her season hitting percentage of .280 is fifth in the conference and is 11th in kills per game (2.6 kpg).

The selection of the student-athlete month was the second this year. Women's golfer Jordan Davis of Delmar and men's soccer freshman Geraldo Garza of Rockford, Ill., were honored for the month of September.
