LAMONI, Iowa - The Ashford University women's cross country team wrapped up competition at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Graceland University on Sunday, its last test before the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships.

The Saints were without two team members for undisclosed personal reasons and had one individual withdraw because as a precautionary measure.

Freshman Nkemdilim Okwumabua of Rockford, Ill., was Ashford's top finisher with a 22:07 time, good for a 63rd-place finish.

"I've really had to keep reminding Kemi that her freshman year is all about experience," AU Head Coach Tyson Graham said. "It's nice to have Andrew (Drinkall) as an example on the men's side since he's average 2-3 minutes faster than last year. But for now, it's about learning to control those early miles."

Freshman Ashley Murray of Mason City turned in a career-best performance and finished in 23:35, sprinting across the 800 meters to the line. Graham was pleased with her progress and believes she's on the verge of a new personal-best time at the conference meet.

Senior Nichole Salazar (23:48) of Minooka, Ill., pushed Murray in the middle part of the race as she finished right her for 96th.

"That's what makes cross country such a team sport," Graham added. "Everyone pushes each other no matter if you are in the back or the front. Your teammates push you and make you better."

Next up is the MCC Championships in Oskaloosa (hosted by William Penn University) on Saturday, Nov. 7.
