DUBUQUE, Iowa - A penalty kick by freshman Chelsea Fisher of Calgary, Alberta, rallied the Ashford University (11-5-1, 4-3-1 MCC) women's soccer team from a one-goal deficit to eventually tie Clarke College, 1-1 in double overtime on Sunday.
With the tie, Ashford received the No. 5 seed in the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament and will travel to Viterbo University on Oct. 31 for a first-round showdown in La Crosse, Wis.
Fisher scored her seventh goal of the year at the 69:17 mark in the second half, beating Crusaders' goalkeeper Kaylee Steen one-on-one after a penalty was called in the box.
Steen set up to the far left side of the net and Fisher skidded the ball low to the opposite side for the Saints' score.
Clarke struck first in the second period in the 53rd minute after a scoreless first half.
Ashford junior goalkeeper Kylie Willet of East Moline, Ill., dove to her right to make a critical save on Takara Harden's shot in the box with a few minutes left in regulation.
Willet finished with six saves in the 110-minute effort, facing 11 shots by Clarke.
The Saints were able to keep the offensive pressure on Clarke's defense in overtime as Fisher and sophomore Cassie Fitzgerald of Chilliwack, B.C. had respective shots, but Steen saved one attempt and the other sailed high.
