FOREST CITY, Iowa - The Ashford University (20-14, 3-3 MCC) volleyball squad cruised to its 20th win of the regular season and grabbed another Midwest Collegiate Conference win on road at Waldorf College (9-20, 2-4 MCC), 3-0.
The Saints
claimed the league match at Hanson Fieldhouse by scores of 25-17, 25-12, and
26-24.
AU moved up to the .500 mark in league play at 3-3 and are currently in a tie for fourth in the MCC standings with Iowa Wesleyan College after the Tigers fell to Mt. Mercy College tonight.
Under AU Head Coach Micah Cewe, the Saints eclipsed the 20-win mark in the regular season for the third time in his five-year tenure.
"Our girls played really well tonight, we didn't have many communication issues and they played within our system," AU Head coach Micah Cewe said. "Our players were able to put the ball away. In the first two games we had early leads and built off of it. In the third game we had to dig out and fought back hard to close the match."
The Saints claimed the first set with impressive efficiency, hitting .474 with 11 kills and only two errors.
Offensively, Ashford was led by freshman Sarah Wenzel of Clinton and junior Allison Uceda of Lima, Peru, who tallied nine kills each. Wenzel was coming off a career-high 12 kills against the University of Dubuque last Friday.
Ashford was able to put away chances, needing just 82 attack attempts compared to 129 taken by the Warriors. Despite both teams recording the same amount of kills (30), AU's frontline defense gave Waldorf fits with nine blocks.
Wenzel and senior Breelyn McMahon of Princeton, Ill., catalyzed the block party up front, with five assisted blocks apiece. Those totals represented season-high efforts for Wenzel and McMahon.
Junior middle hitter Kelsay McCausland of Camanche added four assisted blocks to go along with seven kills, one match removed after toppling the 1,000 career-kill milestone last Friday.
"Blocking is one of the things we've stressed from the beginning of the year," Cewe said. "We dipped a little at the midseason point, but we're starting to come around like we were at the beginning of the year."
With a preseason goal of a 20-win season already accomplished, the Saints will look to keep adding to the win column this weekend as they face McKendree College (1 p.m.) and St. Ambrose University (3 p.m.) on Saturday in Davenport.
The match against St. Ambrose is not being counted towards the conference standings.
"It's good to get to the 20-win plateau," Cewe said. "It was tough getting there and we had to fight for each win, but we're not done and not quite satisfied yet."
