Abbye Garcia tied the match at 1-all with her seventh goal of the fall

PLATTVILLE, Wis. - Ninety minutes wasn't enough time to determine a winner in regulation in an exciting non-conference matchup between Ashford University (11-5, 4-3 MCC) and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (7-8-2).

In the end though, the host Pioneers edged the Saints in the waning moments to win a nail-biter, 2-1 in double overtime.

Ashford came in with a three-game win streak and was anxious to redeem itself from the 2008 meeting with Platteville, a narrow 1-0 loss.

Platteville's Anna Strasser scored the game winner in the 115th minute, her second of the game.

The Saints had to dig deep and mounted a furious rally that tied the match with just over five minutes remaining in the second half.

AU fired a barrage of shots, including a pair that ricocheted off the crossbar in the final minute, to force the extra period.

"It's a tough loss to swallow because of the nature of the game," AU Head Coach Mick Regan said. "We changed some things at halftime because they were playing 3-5-2 and gave us problems in the midfield and it worked. In the second half we were all over them. We had lots of good chances. I told the team after, it was a fantastic performance."

Sophomore Abbye Garcia of Stillman Valley, Ill., netted her seventh goal of the year from about 15 yards out in the 84th minute to tie and the Saints ripped off four shots (three on goal) to UWP's none in the final four minutes of play.

Freshman Paige Lamb of Spring Lake, N.C., drilled the crossbar on a shot followed by a header attempt in the final minute, Chelsea Fisher of Calgary, Alberta, had a shot go just wide and sophomore Cassie Fitzgerald of Chilliwack, B.C. had her attempt saved by Platteville keeper Kaitlyn Wiedeman.

Regan thought Lamb's header initially passed the line after receiving a cross from Fisher, but play continued before the period expired.

"It looked like Paige scored, but it wasn't called," Regan said. "Cassie (Fitzgerald) picked the pocket of the sweeper and she had a breakaway and the sweeper came up and took her out. Usually a yellow card is assessed, but nothing was called."

The Canadian defender Fitzgerald was credited the assist on Garcia's goal, her fifth of the season. Fitzgerald also had a helper in AU's last game against Waldorf College that is currently under review.

The Pioneers snapped a scoreless tie in the second half with the first of Strasser's two goals at the 66:25 mark. AU outshot UWP heading into halftime, 4-2.

Both teams managed a shot in the first overtime, but following a corner kick by Garcia in the second extra frame, Strasser drilled home the winner on the opposite end of the turf field.

The Saints travel to Dubuque for the regular-season finale against Clarke College on Saturday before beginning the MCC Tournament on Oct. 31.
