IOWA CITY, Iowa - Ashford University women's golf standout Jordan Davis (84-80-82--246) of Delmar received a special invitation to compete at the Hawkeye Intercollegiate last weekend that featured 13 Div. I programs.
Davis held her own against a 73-player field at Finkbine Golf Course, finishing in a three-way tie for 54th against in-state schools like the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and Drake University.
The junior played 54 holes in two days, including 36 on Saturday, for the first time in her career. She had a pair of birdies in her first-round effort and had carded a 39 (+3) on the front nine in the second round.
Back-to-back double bogeys on Sunday on No. 11 and 12 offset a birdie on No. 10 coming down the stretch (she started on hole 16), but she recorded a streak of four consecutive pars while making the turn in her final 18.
"Given the opportunity, it was very exciting and I wanted to see where I placed within that level of competition," Davis said. "It was cool to see how they operate at that high of a level. Everything was run very smooth and it was a very welcoming atmosphere to the athletes."
Unlike the typical 5,600-5,800 yard range on an NAIA golf course, the Finkbine had a layout of over 6,200. Davis faced blustery conditions on Sunday and some chilly weather on Saturday, but nothing she wasn't accustomed to in the fall
The distance didn't bother Davis, who hits the ball about 285-290 yards off the tee and she didn't even notice it until after the first day.
"It was a tough course," Davis said. "The greens were really fast and that was without cutting them for four days. I hate to even think about how fast they would have been if they were cut more recently."
AU Head Coach Josh Davis provided a challenge for Davis and Brittany Boon of Bloomington, Ill., at the beginning of the season, awarding the tournament invite to the player with the lowest stroke average.
Without a Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament this fall, Davis was grateful for the chance to compete for the exemption.
