CLINTON, Iowa - Ashford University
women's golf junior standout Jordan Davis of Delmar was a featured guest on the
Coaches Show on 1340 KROS Radio Wednesday evening.
Davis sat down with longtime host Gary Determan, who was conducting his 500th career show since 1986 at Rastrelli's restaurant.
Ashford volleyball assistant coach Jason Anderson was a guest on the show earlier this fall.
Below is a transcript of Wednesday's discussion between Determan and Davis:
Gary Determan: You got the opportunity at the NAIA national tournament in women's golf. Let's talk about the game of golf. I know it's a family sport. How did it get started for you?
Jordan Davis: It was family. About four years old, I was getting in those three-wheel golf carts with my parents and sisters and ever since I've been playing.
GD: You had twin sisters (Brooke and Brittany) growing up, how was the competition between you? Did they take it easy on the little sister?
JD: No, not at all (laughs). I didn't start beating them until my freshman year in college (laughs). It was nice though because they were up at Loras College and we would compete against them in meets.
GD: Good, all-around athlete. You play basketball as well. Does that help complement your golf game as a competitor like that?
JD: I just think that staying in shape, staying active and staying competitive -- all of that carries over to golf, for me anyways.
GD: You went to Maquoketa High School. How did you decide upon Ashford?
JD: I talked to (AU women's basketball Head) Coach (Chris) Powers and what would have been Coach (Dustin) Bierman, who was the old golf coach, and they both recruited me really hard. I wanted to stay close to home and I got a good deal going to school here.
GD: Talk about the golf competition in NAIA. Some of the courses you play on and some of the competition you go up against.
JD: Some of the courses that we play in college I played in high school, so the only difference was really moving the tees back. It was nice to definitely be familiar with these courses. At nationals, competition was a whole different level, but it was a fun atmosphere to be around in.
GD: To qualify for nationals, you had to go through a playoff?
JD: Yeah, Kelly Jansen, she was a senior last year at St. Ambrose University and we had been friendly rivals all year and it was bittersweet to end the conference meet with a chip-in on a playoff like that.
GD: Tell us a little bit about your experience at the national tournament. Did they roll out the red carpet for you in Rapid City, S.D.?
JD: My adrenaline was going all week long and I haven't played 18 holes of golf for six days in a row consistently like that. To carry that over from the spring into the fall, I felt like that has helped out a lot this year.
GD: I understand the weather conditions were not the best at the national tournament and I talked to Coach (Josh) Davis about your mental toughness. Talk about the conditions. How difficult was it to play?
JD: Weather-condition wise, with wind, you have to be smart and know what club to hit on different shots. Other than that, the weather was probably some of the worst I've ever played in. I was hoping we'd end up in Florida somewhere, but we weren't that lucky (laughs). The national tournament is back out in Rapid City, S.D., this year too.
GD: Second round was critical for you at the national tournament. Talk about that round
JD: The second round was nice as the day went along. It didn't start out nice, but it got nicer. I had been playing really solid. I had a double-bogey on hole 10 I think, but after that, kind of bounced back and grinded out the rest of the round and shot a really good score that day.
GD: You play spring and fall seasons as well, right?
JD: It used to be fall was our main season and spring we'd just go out and play and be competitive, but this year, we just had our fall conference preview last weekend and it got shortened one day. In the spring, we'll have a 54-hole tournament of 18 holes three days in a row and I'm hoping the weather will be nicer, but you never know.
GD: You never know, but what would it be like to get back to the national tournament?
JD: It would be great. I really, really want the team to get out there because it would be that much more fun.
GD: You are getting ready for basketball now, Jordan. Is it difficult to balance the two sports?
JD: I guess I just kind of got into a routine with it in my freshman year and then in high school too, I was doing multiple sports. There's about a two and a half weeks in the fall where I'm doing both of them and it gets pretty hectic with school on top, but that's only two and a half weeks.
GD: How's it looking for Ashford women's basketball this season?
JD: It's hard to tell going against each other practice, but in a couple weeks we go to Black Hawk East for a couple scrimmages, so after next weekend, we'll be able to tell a lot more.
GD: Will you be at the point or the shooting guard this year?
JD: A little bit of both I hope. I think we'll be looking to mix it up this year.
GD: Thank you very much Jordan for stopping by. We appreciate your time.
JD: Thank you very much.
