DAVENPORT, Iowa - The No. 29 Ashford University (11-0-2, 3-0-2 MCC) men's soccer team kept its hot streak going on a frigid afternoon to honor a class of 12 seniors in a defeat over Iowa Wesleyan College, 2-0, on Saturday.
By collecting its 11th win of the fall, Ashford remains unbeaten on the year, and only Bethel College (Ind.) has more wins (12) in the NAIA national standings that has maintained a no-loss record.
Saturday's match was the Saints' last home game of the season at the Davenport Soccer Complex on Senior Day when the AU field was deemed unplayable earlier in the week.
The Saints remain a half game back of Grand View University in the Midwest Collegiate Conference standings along with Viterbo University.
The Tigers (4-10, 2-3 MCC) dropped their second game in a row and saw a four-game win streak in the series against Ashford come to a close.
"The weather conditions were far from ideal and we were able to get enough done on offense," AU Head Coach Richard Markham said. "Now we've got a stretch of five straight road games where we'll need a different level of focus to achieve our goals that we laid out at the beginning of the season.
Headbands, long-sleeved gear and leggings were out in full force as frigid, sub-40 degree temperatures rolled across the field. Snow flurries rolled across the Clinton area earlier in the morning.
Appropriately enough on their day, seniors Soroush Kalhor of Rock Island, Ill., and Eddie Garza of Rockford, Ill., each found the net to lead the Saints' offensive attack.
Kalhor scored the game winner at the 14:20 mark and Garza iced the match on the opposite end of the field in the second half, drilling his team-leading seventh goal past Tigers' goalkeeper Troy Osborne.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Roman of Belvidere, Ill., was stellar in net again, pitching his fifth shutout this season. He faced 17 shots, made five saves and turned away back-to-back penalty kick attempts in the waning moments by Iowa Wesleyan's Jesus Soto.
Ashford was
without the services of junior Vedran Ilic of Rockford, Ill., who served his
one-game suspension from a red card issued in the game against
Ashford continues league play on Wednesday, traveling to William Penn University for a 7 p.m. matchup.
