ONALASKA, Wis. - The Ashford University men's golf team concluded its fall campaign up north in Wisconsin under chilly weather conditions at the two-day Ronnie Eastman Invitational hosted by Viterbo University.
The Saints closed with a 322, a five-stroke improvement from Sunday's first round, to finish eighth in a 14-team field. Ashford started Monday's final round that included a fog delay in a seventh-place tie with William Penn University.
Viterbo's Derrick Meier claimed top honors on his home course at the La Crosse Country Club, firing back-to-back rounds of even-par 72.
However, it was another Wisconsin state school that earned top team honors in Wisconsin Eau Claire (286-305--591), edging the host V-Hawks by just nine strokes.
"Unfortunately, the weather was unfavorable and scores across the board might have been inflated," AU Head Coach Chris Powers said. "We'll have to adjust in the spring because we lose a pair of seniors, but our team will be able to shoulder the load in stride."
Freshman Nac Huachai of Windermere, Fla., carded back-to-back rounds of 3-over-par 75 to finish ninth out of 77 individuals.
Huachai had one three-putt on Monday and stretched his streak of top-10 finishes to five in just six attempts. He had three birdies in each round and finished his final round with 30 putts while hitting 11 fairways and 10 greens in regulation.
The rookie compiled a 75.3 stroke average in nine rounds during the fall which includes an uncharacteristic 88 recorded in his AU debut and first collegiate meet at the Loras Invitational.
Omitting the 88 (+16), Huachai's scoring average is better by 1.55 strokes (73.75).
"Conditions on Sunday were ideal and I was hitting my irons well, but I couldn't take advantage of it because my putting let me down," Huachai said. "I'm satisfied [about the fall], but I'll be practicing hard before the spring season and looking forward to play conference meets in the spring."
Senior Tyler Sukut (83) of Clinton, senior Mike Reddersdorf (82) of Marengo, Ill., and freshman Lucas Mulholland (82) of Mount Vernon, improved their scores from Sunday. The invitational marked Sukut and Reddersdorf's final collegiate meet of their careers.
"We're going to miss (Mike) Reddersdorf and Tyler (Sukut) in the lineup for spring, but that gives a couple other players an opportunity to step up and fill the void," Powers said. "We had our inconsistencies this fall, but the team will work hard in the winter to iron those out."
Sophomore Colt Ostrum of Mount Carroll, Ill., finished with a 92 after opening with an 86 in first-round play.
Due to a conference rule change effective this season, the MCC Championship for both men's and women's golf will be held in the spring.
