PEORIA, Ill. - The Ashford University women's cross country team wrapped up a busy Friday, finishing its first 5K event of the year at the Bradley Open. The Saints ran against 16 teams in a meet that featured several NCAA Div. I programs.

"I've seen great individual improvement from day-to-day and we have a very coachable group of young ladies," AU Head Coach Tyson Graham said. "We started working on pacing really hard this past week and I still foresee great improvements for the William Penn meet in early October."

Freshman Nkemdilim Okwumabua of Rockford, Ill., paced Ashford again, finishing in a time of 23:48. Fellow freshman Ashley Murray of Mason City was just 17 seconds behind and senior Nichole Salazar of Minooka, Ill., trailed just seven seconds off Murray's pace.

Chhutani Berry of Chicago and Olivia Canales of Sterling, Ill., came in at 29:19 and 32:25, respectively.

Senior Datisha Duncan of Chicago, added to the roster within the last week, competed in her first cross country meet since her high school days.

"The women have to learn to control their pace and not go out too fast or too slow and then maintain throughout the middle miles," Graham said. "We're still learning."
