GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 2013 season came to an end for the Ashford University men's tennis program on Friday, Apr. 26, when the team was ousted from the NAIA Unaffiliated Grouping Tournament, held in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The Saints, entering the event at the tournament's #5-seed, lost to fourth-seeded Indiana Tech, 6-3, to finish the 2013 campaign with a 10-6 record overall in duel competition.
Ashford lost a pair of double contests before making things interesting in singles action. Five singles matches needed three sets in order to be decided but in the end, juniors Carlos Pico and Alvaro Merino won the lone singles matches for the Saints.
Pico's win came at #3 singles; 6-4, 5-7, 11-9, while Merino picked up a win at #5 singles by a final tally of 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Merino, alongside teammate Moises Hernandez collected AU's lone victory in doubles action, #3 doubles, by a score of 8-5.
