ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Closing out the regular season, the Ashford University men's tennis team made a short drive south Tuesday afternoon, Apr. 16, to battle the Vikings of Augustana College (Ill.).
All three doubles contests and four of the six singles matchups came down to a tiebreak, but in the end the Vikings pulled out a narrow 5-4 victory at the Lower Campus Courts in Rock Island.
AU opened the contest on the right foot, earning wins in two of the three doubles matches. At #2 doubles, the tandem of Carlos Pico and Diego Aviles improved to 7-1 overall this season as a doubles pairing with a 9-8 win.
Joining them at #3 doubles was junior Moises Hernandez and freshman Arno Epping, who teamed up for their second win of the 2013 season, a 9-8 decision.
However, the Vikings got the better of AU during singles action. Ashford's Pavao Krzelj claimed a 7-6, 2-6, 10-8 victory at #2 singles while Guayaquil, Ecuador-native Alvaro Merino picked up a 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 win at #5 singles to notch the lone points for the Saints as Augustana pulled out a 5-4 win.
The loss snaps a four-match winning streak for the Saints as the team closes the regular season with a 10-5 record overall.
Ashford travels to Grand Rapids, Mich. on Apr. 27-29 for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament.
