LAMONI, Iowa - The Ashford University tennis teams returned to action on Saturday, Apr. 21 as they visited Lamoni, Iowa for twin duels against Graceland University and Missouri Valley College.
Both teams were swept on the day as the men lost to the host-Yellowjackets of Graceland, 6-3, before dropping a 9-0 decision to Missouri Valley. The women also came out on a losing end against Graceland, 6-3, while falling to the Vikings of Missouri Valley, 7-2.
The #2-doubles team of Moises Hernandez and Luis Castillo took the lone doubles match of the day for the AU men against Graceland by an 8-3 decision over the Yellowjacket duo of Carloas Jimenez and Luka Stablovic. But GU would tighten their grip on the duel by winning four of the six singles contests as AU dropped the opener, 6-3.
Castillo encored in #4-singles with a 7-5, 4-6 (10-2) win before Diego Aviles defeated Stablovic in a 7-5, 6-4 decision.
In women's action, the #3-doubles team of Andreina Guedez and Theresa Stumpf took the lone doubles win of the day for the women when they blasted the tandem of Joyanne Carroll and Hannah Greenwood of Graceland by an 8-2 score.
LaCrosse, Wis. freshman Sara Vach won both of her singles matches on the day, picking up a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win against Greenwood before taking a 6-2, 6-2 tilt against MVC. Guedez concluded her day by winning at #3-singles in the match against Missouri Valley while Sami Melcher earned a #4-singles win against Graceland.
The Saints return to the court this upcoming Friday, Apr. 27 when the teams open play at the ITA Regional Tournament in St. Louis.
