
Box Score vs. Illinois-Springfield
CLINTON, Iowa - Riding a three duel winning streak, the Ashford University women's tennis team ended a stretch of 10 competition-less days on Tuesday, Apr. 3, when the team appeared in a pair of duels in back-to-back days.
The Saints squeaked out a 5-4 victory over the Prairie Stars of the University of Illinois-Springfield on Tuesday before closing out the week by returning home and handing St. Ambrose University an 8-1 loss Wednesday afternoon.
Ashford 5, University of Illinois-Springfield 4
The Saints picked up three forfeits on Tuesday afternoon before winning another two matches to emerge victorious in the closely contested duel.
Viroqua, Wis.-native Sami Melcher was the lone AU Saint to win both matches she appeared in on the day as she won at #4-singles 6-3, 6-1. In doubles competition, Melcher teamed up with teammate Sara Vach at #2-doubles to win 9-8 (7-1).
Ashford 8, St. Ambrose 1
AU then returned home on Wednesday to host the Queen Bees of St. Ambrose University at Max Lynn Courts in Clinton where the home squad blasted the Bees in doubles competition before coasting through singles to a 8-1 win.
St. Ambrose would get outscored 24-2 during the doubles portion of the event and was swept at #2-doubles by Melcher and Vach, 8-0. The #1-doubles group of Ana Mayagoitia and Montseratt Elizando, along with the #3-doubles crew of Andriena Guedez and Theresa Stumpf, collected 8-2 wins.
Mayagoitia won at #1-singles 6-2, 6-2 before Guedez earned a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at #3-singles. Stumpf also won 6-0, 6-0 as Melcher and Vach picked up victories at #4 and #5-singles, respectively.
The Saints take the next two weeks off before traveling to Lamoni, Iowa on Apr. 21 to line up against Missouri Valley College and Graceland University.
