CLINTON, Iowa - After taking more than two weeks off, the Ashford University tennis teams got back to action on Saturday, Mar. 24.

The men's squad welcomed the Regents of Rockford College to the Ashford Indoor Community Tennis Center while the women's team visited Joliet, Ill. to battle the Saints of St. Francis University. Both teams picked up big victories over their respective opponents as the men swept Rockford, 9-0, while the women picked up a 5-4 victory over SFU.


Men's Tennis: Ashford 9 - Rockford 0

The Saints jumped all over the Regents right from the beginning of the duel by nearly completing clean sweeps of both doubles matches and collecting a third victory by forfeit to take an early 3-0 lead.

The duo of Carlos Pico and Alvaro Merino won at #1 doubles 8-2 before the team of Moises Hernandez and Luis Castillo won a decisive 8-0 decision at #2 doubles.

In singles action, Pico won 6-1, 6-1 in top singles while Merino and Hernandez each won 6-1, 6-0 matches at #2 and #3 singles, respectively. Luis Castillo earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at #4 singles before Diego Aviles claimed a victory at #5 singles 6-0, 6-0.

The Regents forfeited the final singles match as AU won 9-0.

Women's Tennis: Ashford 5 - St. Francis 4

On the women's side, AU played shorthanded but strung together four victories in singles action after falling behind 2-1 in the doubles portion to pick up a 5-4 win on their opponents from the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The #2 doubles tandem of Andreina Guedez and Sami Melcher earned the lone doubles win for Ashford after pulling out a 9-8 (7-4) match by virtue of a tiebreaker.

Both also assisted the visiting team in taking four of the six singles matches as Guedez won at #3 singles by a final decision of 6-1, 6-2 while Melcher won 6-4, 6-4 at #4 singles.

Ana Mayagoitia won a 6-3, 6-4 battle at #1 singles before Theresa Stumpf took the fifth and final win for Ashford at #5 singles by a 6-1, 6-1 margin.

The AU women's squad returns to the friendly confines of the Ashford Indoor Community Tennis Center on Wednesday, Apr. 4 when they battle the Queen Bees of St. Ambrose. Match time is set for 4 p.m.

The men return to action on Saturday, Apr. 14 when the team competes in a triangular with Wartburg College and Buena Vista University.
